World Athletics Championship

The World Athletics Championship is the biggest event in track and field. Only the Summer Olympics and FIFA World Cup draw more athletes. It’s so large that it has its own mascot, which changes each year to reflect the edition and host city. In 2023 it was Youhuu, the racka sheep, a symbol of Hungary’s countryside. It follows in a tradition that includes Legend the Bigfoot for Eugene 2022, Falah in Qatar 2022 and Hero the Hedgehog for London 2017.

The most exciting moments from 2023 World Athletics Championships

There has never been more buzz around the sport of track and field than last year when the 2022 World Championships were held in Eugene, Oregon, otherwise known as Track Town U.S.A. Whether you were at Hayward Field or watching on your television, there was something special about the championships that had you feeling like you were witnessing superheroes in action.

There were so many high points to this edition of the World Championships, but a few really stand out. First and foremost, the Dutch multi-distance star Sifan Hassan reclaimed her form in the marathon after an early downfall in the 10,000 meters. She jumped to the front with just under two miles remaining and cruised to victory in 2:08:53, a new personal best by almost five seconds. It was an incredible moment of redemption after she had dropped the baton in a disqualifying exchange during the 4x400m relay on the opening day of competition.
