World Athletics Championship

The World Athletics Championship, formerly IAAF World Indoor Championships until 2019, are a biennial outdoor track and field competition organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations. The competition is held every two years, a month and a half after the Olympic Games, and it is considered the highest level of senior international athletics.

Defending champion and world record-holder Mahuchikh will look to retain her title in the women’s high jump, but it looks like she’ll have some serious competition. Australia’s double Olympian Morgan Lake has been on the hunt all season, and she won the Zurich Diamond League with a 2.04m clearance — a new Oceanian area record and Australian national record, to boot.

The men’s 100m is another intriguing battle. American Noah Lyles has beaten Letsile Tebogo twice in head-to-head races on the Diamond League this year, but Tebogo will want to make amends. The Saint Lucian sprinter has a lot going for him, including a massive PR in Paris that saw him break the Olympic record by five-thousandths of a second.

The defending world champions in both the marathon and 10,000m are also in fine form. But the latter has an additional complication: Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigt Knudsen has a serious Achilles injury. Whether or not he can compete will be decided on Friday at the earliest, but if he isn’t fit, the race might go to Jake Wightman.
