Forest fires are one of the significant factors that contribute to global climate change. This process not only damages local ecosystems but also has far-reaching impacts on the atmosphere and climate conditions worldwide. Carbon dioxide (CO2) produced due to forest fires makes a major contribution to the greenhouse effect. When forests burn, large amounts of carbon stored in woody biomass are released into the atmosphere. This causes an increase in the concentration of CO2, a greenhouse gas that plays a role in global warming. For example, according to data from Global Forest Watch, forest fires in Brazil and Indonesia each year release billions of tons of CO2, exacerbating the existing climate crisis. Apart from CO2, forest fires also release various other dangerous gases, including methane (CH4) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). These two gases have a higher global warming potential than CO2. The presence of these gases in the atmosphere accelerates global warming, resulting in changes in weather patterns, increased temperatures and climate shifts. The long-term impacts of forest fires also include loss of biodiversity. Forests are home to many species, both flora and fauna. Fires that hit forests change natural habitats, cause the extinction of several species, and disrupt the balance of the ecosystem. Loss of biodiversity reduces the ability of ecosystems to adapt to climate change and worsens the situation. The sustainability of water resources is also affected by forest fires. Forests function as a buffer for the hydrological cycle. When forests burn, the soil can lose its structure and ability to absorb water. This causes flooding and changes in river flow patterns, which in turn affects the availability of clean water for communities. Mitigation efforts against climate change must include handling forest fires. Actions such as land rehabilitation, sustainable forest management and increasing public awareness are crucial. Countries need to work together to enforce strict laws against illegal forest burning practices as a first step in maintaining forest sustainability. One approach that is starting to be implemented is the use of technology for early fire detection and monitoring of fire-prone areas. In addition, developing policies that support forest conservation and rehabilitation of affected areas can help minimize the effects of forest fires on the climate. Concrete examples are reforestation initiatives in Brazil and natural resource management programs in Indonesia designed to increase the ability of forests to absorb carbon. In this way, we are not only trying to stop forest fires, but also increasing the area of forest which functions as a CO2 absorber. Forest fires are a complex problem and require a deep understanding of the interactions between ecosystems and climate. By conserving forests and increasing prevention efforts, we can make significant strides towards more stable and sustainable climate change. This is a shared task that requires global cooperation for the sake of future generations.
