The Largest Volcano Erupts in This Century: Its Impact on the Environment The Tambora Volcano eruption, which occurred in 1815, is still remembered as one of the largest eruptions in history. However, in this century, the eruption of Mount Merapi in 2010 and the eruption of Mount Kelud in 2014 created a significant impact on the environment and surrounding communities. The eruption of Mount Merapi, which is known as one of the most active mountains in Indonesia, produced hot clouds and volcanic material covering the Yogyakarta area and its surroundings. The immediate impact of this eruption included extensive damage to agricultural land. The area around Merapi, known to be fertile due to its volcanic soil, became temporarily uncultivable, causing a decline in local agricultural output. The social impact of this incident is also very worrying. Thousands of people were forced to flee, leaving their homes and residences. Psychological stress and mental health problems are becoming serious problems among the affected communities. Disaster management risks are a new challenge for the government, which must prepare mitigation strategies to face similar disasters in the future. Post-eruption ecosystem adaptation is also an important focus. Efforts will naturally take time, and helping habitat recovery is a shared responsibility between the community, government and non-governmental organizations. Land rehabilitation with a focus on food-producing crops before switching to more complex crops is the main strategy in recovery efforts. Awareness of the importance of early warning systems and disaster risk education plays a crucial role in reducing the impact of future eruptions.
